Personality Optimizer

Field Value
Status Idea / scoping (2026-07-20)
Type Personal OS tool → possible product (simulation + decision aid)
Audience (v0) Darcy first (self-experiment); public product only if the loop proves useful
Not Therapy, clinical assessment, or a “fix your personality” quiz farm

One-line brief

Simulate counterfactual versions of yourself — dial traits up/down, run life scenarios, and separate what is plastic enough to change from what is sticky or identity-preserving, so effort goes where it actually improves outcomes.

Why this is a project (not a note)

The idea keeps resurfacing as a bridge between:

  1. personal-operating-system — honest constraints → systems. Today that map is mostly static stubs. A personality optimizer would stress-test those constraints: which shortcomings are worth redesigning around, which are worth changing, and which are load-bearing identity.
  2. goals thesis — context depth about the owner. Agents (and future-Darcy) decide better when they know not only projects and calendars, but default reaction patterns, energy under stress, and which self-edits are realistic.
  3. Adjacent health / CBT surface — projects/luna explored CBT workflows and hit auth/DB friction; this idea is narrower and more simulation-shaped (what-if trait deltas → outcome deltas), not a full therapy app.

Logged here so the concept has a single source of truth before it either becomes a build or gets shelved cleanly.

Core problem

People (and coaches, and AI advisors) often give advice that assumes personality is infinitely malleable — “just be more proactive / less avoidant / more social.” That fails in two ways:

  • False changeability: some traits are highly heritable / sticky; fighting them burns willpower and produces brittle “performances.”
  • False immutability: other patterns are trainable (habits, skills, environment design, cognitive strategies) and get mislabeled as “who I am.”

Personality Optimizer is a decision aid that makes those two buckets explicit, then simulates: if I change X by Δ, what happens to outcomes Y across scenarios Z — and at what cost?

Core loop (v0 design)

1. Baseline Capture current trait profile + context (roles, goals, constraints)
2. Change set Propose deltas (trait dials, habit stacks, environment moves)
3. Plasticity gate Tag each delta: plastic / sticky / identity-preserving / unknown
4. Simulate Run scenarios (work, relationships, creative output, health, agent trust)
5. Compare Score outcomes vs baseline; surface tradeoffs and second-order effects
6. Decide Commit to experiments worth running in real life — or keep the trait and redesign systems around it

Output should not be “become someone else.” Output should be: change this, work around that, protect this as identity.

Trait model (starting hypothesis)

Prefer a small, interpretable model over a proprietary quiz battery. Candidate stack for v0:

Layer What it captures Why
Big Five / OCEAN (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism/Emotional Stability) Broad personality axes with decades of research Enough resolution for “dial + simulate”; not a diagnostic
Facet overlays (optional) e.g. industriousness vs orderliness under Conscientiousness When a coarse dial is too blunt for a real decision
Behavioral levers (separate from traits) Habits, environment, skills, scheduling, social graph The actually plastic surface — often confused with personality
Values / identity anchors Non-negotiables (e.g. low-blast-radius trust stance, anti-cheesy marketing aversion — see personal-operating-system) Things simulation should not casually optimize away

Explicitly deferred for v0: clinical inventories (depression/anxiety scales as product features), MBTI-style type boxes as the primary model, “ideal personality” leaderboards.

Plasticity vs stickiness (working frame)

Rough, research-informed heuristics for the gate — not medical claims:

Bucket Examples Default optimizer advice
Sticky / high heritability signal Baseline Extraversion range, emotional reactivity floor/ceiling Prefer environment + role design over “become opposite”
Moderately plastic Conscientiousness-adjacent habits (planning rituals, sleep, training adherence) Prefer small experiments with measurement
Highly plastic (misnamed as personality) Skills, tools, social scripts, calendar structure, agent delegation Treat as systems on personal-operating-system, not trait surgery
Identity-preserving Values, ethics, creative taste, trust posture Flag as protect unless Darcy explicitly opts into rewriting

The product win is honest labeling of which bucket a proposed change sits in — plus a simulation that shows when “change me” is worse than “change the system.”

Simulation surface (what “run simulations” means)

v0 should stay scenario-based and qualitative-quant, not a fake life RPG:

  1. Scenario packs tied to real Darcy domains:
  2. Product / team collaboration (projects/early-childhood-education-app)
  3. Agent trust & gate discipline (projects/crusty, draft → human-gate → execute)
  4. Creative & music (projects/rusty-cage, projects/music-production)
  5. Coaching & body (projects/happy-body)
  6. Health adherence (projects/personal-health-diet, projects/sleep-apnea)
  7. Social / network (projects/the-gathering)
  8. Intervention packs:
  9. Trait dial (e.g. +Conscientiousness facets via habit stack)
  10. Environment move (e.g. protect creative time — already a POS shortcoming)
  11. Delegation move (e.g. marketing → Crusty — already a POS system)
  12. Outcome axes (score lightly, always with uncertainty):
  13. Goal progress, stress load, relationship quality, creative output, sleep/health, trust/safety of agent actions, identity coherence
  14. Counterfactual report:
  15. What improved, what degraded, what stayed the same
  16. Effort cost and relapse risk
  17. Recommended: experiment, system redesign, or accept & route around

LLM role: generate scenario narratives and tradeoff analysis grounded in the wiki + a private baseline profile — not invent certainty where plasticity is unknown.

Privacy & trust posture

Personality data is sensitive context. Default assumptions:

  • v0 = local / private first — baseline profile stays out of the public wiki (raw/ or local notes only).
  • Public product (if ever): local-first or BYOK, no shadow personality dossiers for ads.
  • Aligns with goals refinement: app viable when it is a permissioned trust surface, not UI theater.
  • Main Mac LM Studio / Gemma path is a candidate for offline reflection loops (already noted on What-Im-Working-On / personal-operating-system) — orthogonal to Crusty credentials.

Guardrails (things explicitly not to do)

  • Not therapy / not medical. No diagnoses, no crisis handling, no “treat your Neuroticism” clinical framing. Point people to professionals when distress is the issue.
  • Not gamified self-erasure. Optimizing away identity anchors for metric gains is a failure mode — call it out.
  • Not infinite quiz funnel. Assessment serves simulation; simulation serves decisions.
  • Not unscoped life coach chatbot. One job: counterfactual trait/system changes → outcome tradeoffs → experiment list.
  • Not Crusty runtime by default. Crusty stays low-permission / separate machine. Any future agent integration is read-only advice drafts behind a human gate — never silent personality rewriting of agent soul files.

Strategic fit

Lens Fit
goals — context depth Strong — durable model of owner temperament + plasticity
goals — trusted access Medium — only if product becomes a permissioned client for private profile + experiments
goals — durable trust Strong if honesty about uncertainty beats overconfident “fix yourself” products
Top-priority product building Outside — idea capture + light scoping only; 2026-08-22 attention is projects/where-am-i
Product path Personal tool first → optional public discovery surface later (same pattern as projects/sleep-apnea)

MVP sketch (if un-shelved)

Minimal useful artifact before any app:

  1. Private baseline note (Big Five + 5–10 identity anchors + top POS shortcomings) — local only.
  2. One scenario pack (e.g. “marketing aversion” or “deep work / context switching”) with 3 interventions: trait-ish habit, environment, delegation.
  3. One simulation write-up comparing outcomes; end with a real-life 2-week experiment or an explicit “keep trait, improve system” decision.
  4. Only then: decide whether a UI (web / iOS / chat skill) is worth building — or whether a Grok + wiki ritual is enough.

Possible later surfaces: lightweight web simulator, iOS journal+sim, or a Cursor/Grok skill that reads private baseline + wiki context and emits experiment cards. Reuse lessons from projects/luna (avoid accounts/DB until the loop is proven).

Open questions

  • Assessment source: self-report only vs optional validated short instruments (still non-clinical)?
  • Plasticity priors: cite literature bands vs learned from Darcy’s own experiment log over months?
  • Multiplayer: personal only, or coach/mentee mode (Happy Body adjacent) later?
  • Agent coupling: should Crusty / future agents consume a plasticity map for better delegation advice — and if so, what’s the sync path that doesn’t leak private traits into the public wiki?
  • Name: “Personality Optimizer” is clear but slightly self-help-coded; keep for now, rename if productized.

Success criteria (idea stage)

  • Page exists and is cross-linked (this ingest).
  • At least one private baseline + one simulated scenario written offline (not in public wiki).
  • A clear kill / keep / build call after that first simulation — no half-built app.
  • personal-operating-system — constraints → systems; this project stress-tests which constraints to redesign vs rewrite
  • goals — context-depth leg; honest uncertainty = truth-seeking AI
  • projects/luna — prior CBT web app; productionization lesson (accounts/DB friction)
  • projects/happy-body — habit / body lane; coaching trust surface
  • projects/sleep-apnea — personal research → discovery tool pattern
  • projects/crusty — agent that should eventually respect plasticity maps, not invent personality edits
  • What-Im-Working-On — listed under exploratory / ideas, not top-priority product building
